Fit Guide · No. 01

"Oversized" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in fashion right now, and it means very different things depending on who cut the shirt. Get it right and you look intentional and effortless; get it wrong and you look like you raided someone bigger's wardrobe. Here's exactly how an oversized tee should fit — and how to land your size the first time.

What "oversized" actually means

Oversized is not just "a size too big." A real oversized tee is cut differently: a boxier body, a wider chest, and a dropped shoulder seam that sits partway down your upper arm instead of on the shoulder point. That drop is the whole look — it's what gives oversized its relaxed, structured drape instead of a tent-like sag.

The goal is boxy, not baggy. Room to move, clean lines, a silhouette that looks deliberate.

Where an oversized tee should sit

  • Shoulders: the seam should fall a few centimetres past your natural shoulder, onto the upper arm. This is intentional — do not try to make it sit on the shoulder point.
  • Chest & body: loose and skimming, with clear room — but it should still hang from your frame, not balloon around it.
  • Length: hits at or just below the hip / upper thigh. Long enough to layer and tuck, not so long it reads as a dress.
  • Sleeves: wider and a little longer than a regular tee, ending mid-bicep to just above the elbow.

How to find your size (the 30-second method)

Forget guessing. Grab a t-shirt you already love the fit of, lay it flat, and measure two things:

  • Chest: armpit seam to armpit seam, laid flat.
  • Length: top of the shoulder to the bottom hem.

Match those to the size chart below. For an oversized look, pick the size whose chest is a few inches larger than your flat measurement.

Size Chest (in) Length (in)
XS 39 27
S 41 28
M 43 29
L 45 30
XL 47 31
XXL 49 32
For reference, our fit model is 5'11" / 180 cm and wears a Medium for the classic oversized drape. Every Brainsick tee is cut true-to-size for that boxy look.

Between two sizes? Size up

If your measurement lands between two sizes, or you just want it roomier, size up. Oversized is forgiving — a slightly bigger tee still drapes well, while a slightly-too-small one loses the entire relaxed effect and starts to cling. When in doubt, go bigger.

Oversized vs. just "too big"

There is a line. Oversized still relates to your body — the drop shoulder is deliberate, the length is controlled, the fabric has enough weight to fall cleanly. "Too big" is when the shoulder seam hits your elbow, the hem reaches your knees, and the whole thing swallows you. If you are drowning, drop a size. If you look intentionally relaxed, you nailed it.

One underrated factor: fabric weight. A thin, light oversized tee billows and clings; a heavyweight one drapes properly. It's why we build everything on 240 GSM — here's why GSM matters for oversized.

Frequently asked questions

Should I size up for an oversized t-shirt?

Only if you're between sizes or want extra room. Brainsick oversized tees are cut true-to-size for a boxy, drop-shoulder look, so your usual size gives the intended fit. If you measure between two sizes, size up.

Is an oversized t-shirt supposed to be baggy?

Boxy, not baggy. The shoulder seam should sit slightly past your shoulder on the upper arm, the body should skim with clear room, and the length should hit around the hip. If it's swallowing you or the seam reaches your elbow, it's too big.

How do I know my oversized t-shirt size without trying it on?

Lay a t-shirt you already like flat and measure chest (armpit to armpit) and length (shoulder to hem). Match those to the size chart and pick the size whose chest is a few inches larger for the oversized drape.

I'm tall — will an oversized tee be long enough?

Our sizes run XS–XXL with length scaling from 27" to 32". Taller wearers should check the length column and size up if you want more coverage; the boxy cut still looks right a size up.
